Yak is not a common fiber, especially in Brazil. It comes from a long-haired bovine found throughout the Himalayan region, the Tibetan plateau, and some areas of Mongolia and Central Asia. The animals naturally lose their coats during Spring, so the nomads comb them or collect the fibers from the ground. The rough guard hairs are used for making ropes and brushes, while the fine down fibers are used for yarn.
Yak fiber is extremely thin and soft, similar to cashmere, so it became a more sustainable alternative due to yaks’ more gentle steps compared with goats, causing a much lower impact on the soil.
