FROM NORDIC NOIR TO TRUE CRIME PODCASTS

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

I have always been an avid reader of Nordic noir and detective fiction novels. Like every worker in the 21st century, my pleasure time is limited, and I want to make the most of it. I love knitting and reading, but those are two incompatible tasks to do for me at the same time. It was, therefore, a natural transition for me to listen to audiobooks and true crime podcasts. The popularity of true crime podcasts has grown tremendously in recent years, with listeners tuning in to hear stories about real-life crimes and criminals. The genre has become so popular that it has spawned a range of true crime podcasts, each with its unique take on the topic.

Serial Killers: untangling the mind of killers twice a week

One of my favorite true crime podcasts is Serial Killers, produced by Parcast for Spotify. Hosted by Greg Polcyn and Vanessa Richardson, Serial Killers have been running since 2017 and release new chapters twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.

The podcast offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into the psychology, tactics, and insanity of the most infamous serial killers to enhance our comprehension of their psychological makeup. Please don't misunderstand me; serial killers don't have my sympathy or justification. Some have criticized true crime podcasts for being exploitative or sensationalizing crime. However, Serial Killers take a thoughtful and nuanced approach to the topic, providing a deeper understanding of the impact of crime on individuals and society.

“The Family Court Killer”

The most recent episode I listened to was "The Family Court Killer.” It tells how authorities in Sydney, Australia were aware of a serial killer's identity for years but lacked sufficient evidence to bring him to justice. In the 1980s, Leonard Warwick, who had lost custody of his daughter after a divorce, directed his anger toward the family court system staff members. The only way to end the violent attacks was for his ex-wife to relinquish custody of his child. If you want to know how he got caught, listen to it!

True crime podcasts explore the limits of human nature

True crime podcasts offer a unique perspective into criminals' motives and methods while recognizing the hard work of law enforcement officials in bringing perpetrators to justice. Their growth in popularity is a testament to people's fascination with the darker side of human nature and the power of storytelling. Interestingly, women are particularly drawn to true crime podcasts, as they shed light on important issues like violence against women, which can lead to greater awareness and activism in combating such crimes.
