À PROCURA DO NOVELO

Originally written in Spanish.

À procura do novelo is a free yarn festival that takes place every year in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. The fifth edition will take place this year from September 8 to 10, and there’s already a wide range of exhibitors, workshops, and different activities lined up — it’s a party for the crafting world!

The festival is organized by Lucía, Ana, Luis, and Carla, who choose a theme for each edition. Last year, it was the circus, with jugglers and different circus activities that brought the festival to life.

This year, the special ingredient will be music, so there’ll be no shortage of live performances and dancing. Music is a great companion for knitters and crocheters, so the experience inside the venue promises to be wonderful.

The venue for the festival is D. Carlos I Park, which is full of green areas where you can work on your project in the company of other crafters. There’ll also be different options of street food available. The city has a beach, thermal baths, and rich gastronomy, so you can spend the whole weekend there with your family.

The festival’s workshops are varied, and some of them are already sold out. The festival is committed to teaching techniques such as crochet, knitting, macramé, and amigurumi. You can sign up for the workshops on the festival's website.

The festival also has a special place for more traditional techniques from the region, such as Caldas embroidery. For those who do not know this type of embroidery, it’s originally from Caldas da Rainha, and last year, there was a booth where you could see what it’s like.

You can check out the list of exhibitors on the festival's Instagram page. Most of them are Portuguese, and some are from other European countries.

It’ll be a weekend full of yarn, music, and dance, as well as community building. Are you going to À procura do novelo?
